Penang Forum 8

Some 200 people packed the Teochew Association along Chulia Street for Penang Forum 8: Dialogue on Penang’s Floods: A Call to Action.

Exactly one week before the floods on 4-5 November, Dr Kam Suan Pheng of Penang Forum made this informative presentation at Penang Forum 8 on 29 October. She looked at revealing rainfall patterns and flood hot spots and discussed the various causes of floods and what could be done about each of these causes.

Her slide presentation in pdf format can be downloaded here.

At the dialogue, Penang Forum collected a sum of RM3600 for the victims of the Tanjung Bungah landslide tragedy. Pledges from friends also came up to RM1,500. The total sum collected is RM5,100 so far. This sum will be passed to the Penang Stop Human Trafficking Campaign, which is currently working directly with the migrant workers affected by the tragedy.

The background and programme for Penang Forum 8

The recent floods in Penang took many by surprise – especially in areas where people were not prepared. Will our elected representatives, whom we voted for, voice out our concerns in the State Assembly and in Parliament?

Several issues were identified, but are we prepared to tackle the issue holistically?

Penang Forum 8, the eighth public event since the civil society coalition was formed in 2008, will feature a panel of experts who will discuss the possible causes and measures that can be taken to prevent more floods.
